What are great learning spaces?

The linked video has some key UK players express their views on what makes a great learning space: collaboration, discussion, lifelong learning, creativity, social learning, learning outside the classroom.

I really agree with David White's comment: "We need to get better at making sure physical and digital learning spaces coalesce so pedagogic design means that engagement and activity that's happening in the digital space flows in and out of the physical space"

This was borne out in the UCISA Digital Capabilities Survey where we found that Estates strategies were only half-way up the table for supporting and reinforcing the importance of digital capabilities for staff and students. http://www.ucisa.ac.uk/digcap. Some room for improvement there - universities and colleges!

In pondering my research question I wonder if asking Directors of Estates about supporting and reinforcing the importance of digital capabilities for staff and students would be an interesting way to promote and support digital capabilities. Who was it who said that research can change the research environment, though I don't think they were suggesting this was a positive thing! I, on the other hand, think it would be a positive bonus, it could Make or Break Britain!
